Circles in the Sand
Elizabeth Baring ’91 uses Sandplay Therapy, a form of psychotherapy, when clients come to visit. Through Sandplay her clients are given the opportunity to choose from hundreds of tiny objects and miniature figures in order to create in a sand tray a picture of their inner “world.”
Umbrellas and Parasols
Liz Baring relates the umbrellas’ symbolic meanings, from literature citings to art references and representations in sandplay therapy; and includes a parallel between Christo’s umbrella project and the concept of the temenos, a sacred space a therapist creates for each sandplayer. Liberty Enlightening the World: An Archetypal Image
The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the American people, became a beacon of hope to immigrants. Following the tragedy of September 11th her image cannot escape one, on television, in newspapers and magazines. She has become an icon, a goddess of freedom.
